Getting started — what this page does for you
This page walks you step-by-step from unboxing to receiving your first transaction — with concrete actions and safety checkpoints at every step. Rather than repeating marketing slogans, you’ll find concise instructions, clear do-and-don’t items, and quick checks to validate that your keys remain only in your hands.
Unbox & verify
Start by confirming the packaging seal and that the included recovery card and cables are present. Only use the cable included or an equivalent data+power USB cable — cheap, damaged, or unknown cables can be a security risk. Keep the box and serial number (if present) for your records.
Power on & create device pin
Power the device and choose Create a new wallet. Pick a PIN that you will remember but is not easily guessable (avoid birthdays or short repeated digits). The PIN protects the device if it’s physically stolen — it is not a substitute for the recovery phrase.
Write down your recovery phrase — offline
After PIN setup, your device will display 24 words (the recovery phrase) one by one. This phrase is the only backup of your crypto. Write the words in order on the provided recovery card or an offline metal backup; never photograph, screenshot, or store the phrase digitally. Store it somewhere secure and consider splitting copies across trusted locations.
Confirm the phrase & install apps
The device will ask you to confirm a few words from your phrase — this ensures you recorded it correctly. Next, connect to the official Ledger app on your computer or phone to install the blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) you need. Only install apps from the Ledger manager within the official application.
Receive a small test amount
Before transferring large amounts, send a small test transaction to the address generated by your Ledger. Verify the address on the device screen itself — that on-device verification proves the address was generated by your seed and not altered by software on the computer.
Keep software up to date
Ledger periodically releases firmware and app updates that fix bugs and strengthen security. Apply updates through the official app. Never follow update instructions sent by an unexpected email or message — always initiate updates from your device and official app only.
Practical safety practices
Security practices are less about dramatic stories and more about small habits repeated consistently. Treat your recovery phrase like the title deed to your funds — anyone who holds it can recreate your wallet.
- Never enter your 24-word phrase into a website, app, or phone. The device displays the phrase during setup only.
- Verify addresses on-device before sending funds.
- Don’t buy a used hardware wallet — keys may already be compromised.
- Use a passphrase (optional) only after you understand how it changes backups and recovery.
